about
A unique recording of the Coventry Carol, performed and arranged by Anne-Marie Helder.
This 16th Century carol originated in medieval England, although the exact date of the text is unknown.
It was first performed as part of a play in the city of Coventry, in the early 1500’s.
The song is inspired by the infamous story of King Herod, as told in the Gospel of Matthew ~ the 'Massacre of The Innocents', in which Herod ordered the killing of all male infants under the age of 2, in Bethlehem.

lyrics
COVENTRY CAROL
Lully, lullah, my little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.
My little tiny child,
Bye bye, lully, lullay.
O sisters too, how may we do
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we sing,
"Bye bye, lully, lullay”?
Herod the king, in his raging,
Chargèd he hath this day
His men of might in his own sight
All young children to slay.
Then woe is me, poor child, for thee
And ever mourn and may
For thy parting neither say nor sing,
"Bye bye, lully, lullaby."

Dark, angry, heartfelt...some of these lyrics are hard to read, but there is something valedictory about the journey they take you on, if you are prepared to go.
Rachel's songs are not for the faint-hearted but that voice...how can you NOT listen?
Dark beauty, like being strangled by a velvet glove.
And all the while Jon's playing and arrangements are the perfect accompaniment. His melodies carry Rachel's lyrics with subtlety and suppleness. Mike Ashton

An amazing reinterpretations of old Genesis classics. Even "Invisible touch", in my opinion one of the worst songs by Genesis, in this album is a little gem. You can almost imagine Steve Hackett on classical guitar. mario1984
